Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) Requirements & Terms

What to Bring & Requirements
Licence & Identification: You must present a valid UK driving licence (full or provisional) or an EU licence with a UK licence number, along with your National Insurance number.
Eyesight Check: You must be able to read a standard vehicle registration plate from a distance of 20.5 metres (with or without glasses/contact lenses).
Language & Knowledge: Candidates must have a good command of spoken and written English, as well as a strong working knowledge of the Highway Code, traffic signs, and road markings.
Riding Ability: You must be able to ride an adult-sized bicycle competently.
Refresher Courses: If you are attending a CBT refresher course, please email a copy or photo of your previous CBT certificate prior to your training date.
Gear & Clothing Requirements
Inadequate clothing will result in the immediate cancellation of your CBT and forfeiture of your fees.
Clothing: Sturdy denim jeans (with no rips or tears) and ankle-high boots (trainers or canvas shoes are not permitted).
Weather Readiness: Waterproofs are not provided—please check the forecast and dress appropriately.
Jackets: We supply motorcycle jackets up to size 4XL. If you require a larger size, you will need to provide your own suitable motorcycle jacket.
Personal Gear & Helmets: Personal motorcycle safety equipment is permitted. Helmets must be road-legal (certified to ECE 22:05 or ECE 22:06 standards) with a clear visor.
Using Your Own Motorcycle
If you plan to complete the training on your own motorcycle:
You must present a valid Insurance Certificate on the day.
The motorcycle must be roadworthy, display standard L-plates, and have all relevant legal documentation.
Important: You MUST NOT ride your motorcycle to our premises unless you already hold a valid CBT certificate.
Health, Safety & Conduct
Medical Conditions: Any medical conditions or medications that may affect your ability to ride or drive must be disclosed at the time of booking.
Substance Policy: Candidates must be completely free from the influence of alcohol or drugs on the day of training.
Safety & Risk: Motorcycling carries inherent risks. Training is undertaken at your own risk, and Manley’s Motorcycles (including all staff) accepts no liability for personal injury, loss of earnings, or damage to personal items.
Radio Equipment: Communication headsets are provided for the duration of the course. Candidates are responsible for taking care of this equipment and will be charged for any damage incurred.
Insurance, Excess & Cancellation Policy
Insurance Excess: Our policy carries an insurance excess of £500. You are solely responsible for any accidents, incidents, or damages that occur during training, capped at £500.
Collision Damage Waiver (Optional): We offer an optional Collision Damage Waiver for £35 per day, payable before training commences, which covers the cost of the insurance excess.
Under 18s: A parent or legal guardian must sign the terms for any candidate under 18 years of age.
Cancellations & Rescheduling: We require at least 7 working days’ notice to move or cancel your booking. Failure to provide sufficient notice will result in the loss of your fee and require re-booking.
Non-Compliance: Failure to meet any of the requirements above will result in the cancellation of your course without a refund.
Practical Information & Recommendations
Preparation: We strongly recommend completing the online course at ridefree.gov.uk prior to your CBT.
Refreshments: Please bring food and drinks with you for the day.
Parking: Parking directly outside the shop is restricted to staff only, and parking behind the premises is strictly prohibited (reserved for Ford Road Dentist). Please use available street parking nearby.
