Just getting into motorcycling or rekindling a passion that once was? At Manleys our qualified instructors have over 20 years worth of experience so whether you’re doing your CBT and getting onto a bike for the first time or getting back behind the bars after a time away you can feel confident you’re in more than capable hands. We can guide you through the process of getting your license and getting on the road.
Currently in the UK there are three categories of license based on a multitude of factors, predominantly the riders age and kW/bhp output. Here’s a brief guide on what you can expect getting your license and what you need to know. If you need any help we’re more than happy to help just get in touch! First, you must complete a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course before being allowed out on the road. With this, and a provisional licence, you can ride a moped (defined as less than 50cc and restricted to 28mph) with L-plates.
From the age of 16 the CBT motorcycle course is all about teaching you the skills needed to ride a moped or lower-powered motorbike safely and competently. The focus is on safety when using the roads and obtaining a level of competency that you can build upon when riding alone. There is no specific pass or fail test. Certification is carried out by a qualified instructor who will be with you throughout your training and helping you to improve your motorcycling skills.
Once your instructor sees you have reached the CBT standard, you’ll be certified with a DL196 and able to continue practising on your own.
By waiting until the age of 19, you can go for the A2 licence. With CBT and theory in the bag, passing the two modules of the practical test now entitles you to ride any bike up to 47 bhp. This includes some decent and interesting bikes, many of which have more power as standard but can be restricted to 47bhp (as long as their unrestricted power output is no more than 94bhp).
Finally there is the DAS (direct access) from the age of 24 with your CBT and theory test completed you can now complete your full motorcycle licence, then the world is your oyster in which bike to purchace.
